Protecting art, how it all started.

Adsorbi is a research-based company sprung from Chalmers University. Adsorbi’s innovative material was first developed for art conservation through extensive research at the Department of Applied Chemistry and in the EU-funded project APACHE. The project was focused on using chemistry to find smart and long-term solutions for art conservation.

A recently highlighted problem in the area is gaseous pollutants such as VOCs. VOCs are emitted from the objects themselves and results in accelerated deterioration. The Adsorbi material was developed to capture VOCs in art conservation, ensuring that historical and invaluable objects are there for future generations. Since starting the company we have broadened the scope of pollutant removal to many other industries.

Research

The researchers behind the Adsorbi innovation are Romain Bordes and Kinga Grenda. Our CTO & Co-founder, Dr Kinga Grenda has an Industrial PhD (EU Marie Curie fellowship - MSCA) in Chemical Engineering by Universidade de Coimbra (Portugal), where she started her journey working with cellulose based materials. Our Advisor & Co-founder Dr. Romain Bordes is an associate professor and group leader at Chalmers University.

We created a supermaterial

After several years of applied research towards art conservation, a completely new type of material had been developed. Cellulose-based adsorbents with high capacity and low environmental impact. The adsorbing materials have several times higher capacity than the industry standard for gas pollutant removal, resulting in several times longer lifetime of air purification products. Not only suitable for museums, but for many types of industries.

Production

We are producing the Adsorbi materials in Gothenburg, Sweden. In 2025, we are launching our pilot plant, a crucial step in scaling our business and impact. We produce our materials using cellulose from the Nordic forests or recycled paper fibers. Using life cycle assessments, we continuously work to improve our production and environmental footprint.

Our team

The Adsorbi team includes highly qualified professionals and entrepreneurs with backgrounds in chemistry, material development, production, and business development. We have put together an outstanding team with the skills and expertise needed to successfully challenge alternatives on the market, and collaborations with key partners with broad industry connections and the advice of an experienced board of leading experts in cellulose, engineering, sales and production.
